Coed Softball Rules Explained
By Patrick Poulin · Updated October 29, 2026
Coed softball plays like regular slowpitch, with added rules that balance men and women. These usually cover how the batting order alternates by gender, how many of each must be on the field and in which positions, and what happens when a man is walked ahead of a woman. The details vary by league, so the rule sheet always wins.
The batting order#
Every coed league restricts how men and women bat. The usual patterns are strict alternation, or no more than two men in a row. Most leagues also say what happens when a team is short on women: often the empty spot is an automatic out whenever it comes up in the order.
The walk rule#
Many coed leagues have a rule for when a man is walked and a woman is due up next. A common version sends the man to second base instead of first. Some versions then let the woman choose whether to bat or take a walk herself. The rule exists so pitchers can't simply walk men to face women. Read your league's exact wording: it decides whether the rule applies with two outs and on intentional walks.
On the field#
Coed slowpitch is usually played with ten fielders, five men and five women. Leagues commonly require the defense to split evenly:
- two of each gender in the outfield
- two of each in the infield
- a man and a woman as the pitcher and catcher
Playing with fewer women usually means playing with fewer fielders overall.
Other rules you'll often see#
- Home run limits: many rec leagues cap over-the-fence home runs per team per game, and count anything past the limit as an out.
- Pitching: slowpitch arcs, with a minimum and maximum height set by the league.
- Run rules: a mercy rule ends the game early when one team leads by a set number of runs after a set number of innings.
- Equipment: some leagues require a different ball for women's at bats, or certified bats only.
Why the rule sheet matters#
None of these rules are universal. Two coed leagues in the same city can differ on the walk rule, the home run cap and the run rule. Before your first game, read the league's rules and share them with your team. Most arguments on a rec field are about a rule nobody read.
Common Questions
- What is the walk rule in coed softball?
- In many coed leagues, when a man is walked and a woman is due up next, he goes to second base instead of first. Some leagues then let the woman choose to bat or walk. Check your league's wording.
- How many women have to be on the field in coed softball?
- Commonly five of the ten fielders, usually split evenly between infield and outfield, with a man and a woman as pitcher and catcher. Leagues set their own minimums.
- Can a coed softball team play short on women?
- Usually yes, with penalties: fewer fielders on defense and an automatic out where the missing woman would bat. Leagues also set a minimum below which the game is a forfeit.
