How to Make a Round-Robin Softball Schedule
By Patrick Poulin · Updated October 29, 2026
In a single round robin every team plays every other team once. With n teams that's n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games. An even number of teams needs n − 1 rounds with n ÷ 2 games per round. An odd number needs n rounds, and one team sits out each round on a bye.
The math#
For a single round robin with n teams:
- Total games: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2
- Rounds, even number of teams: n − 1, with n ÷ 2 games per round
- Rounds, odd number of teams: n, with (n − 1) ÷ 2 games per round and one team on a bye each round
Worked out:
- 6 teams: 15 games over 5 rounds, 3 games per round
- 7 teams: 21 games over 7 rounds, 3 games per round, one bye per round
- 8 teams: 28 games over 7 rounds, 4 games per round
- 10 teams: 45 games over 9 rounds, 5 games per round
A double round robin, where everyone plays everyone twice, doubles the games and rounds.
Building the pairings (the circle method)#
- Number the teams. If the count is odd, add a "bye" as an extra team.
- Write half the teams across the top row and the other half, in reverse, across the bottom. Each column is a game.
- Keep team 1 fixed. Move every other team one place clockwise, and the new columns are the next round.
- Repeat until you're back where you started.
This guarantees every pair meets exactly once. Then alternate who is home and away so no team is always on the same side.
Fitting it on your fields#
Divide the games per round by the games your field slots hold per week. Eight teams playing 4 games per round on a field with two time slots per night need two nights, or two fields, per round. Then add rainout weeks at the end of the season. A season with no makeup dates is a season with unfinished standings.

Fairness checks#
- Spread early and late time slots evenly across teams.
- With byes, make sure no team sits twice before every other team has sat once.
- If teams play twice in a night (a doubleheader), pair them against different opponents.
On Softball.love, commissioners build the week-by-week schedule in the schedule editor, or import it from a spreadsheet. Players and captains get a calendar feed that updates whenever the schedule changes.
Common Questions
- How many games is a round robin with 8 teams?
- 28 games: 8 × 7 ÷ 2. That's 7 rounds with 4 games per round.
- How do byes work in a round robin?
- With an odd number of teams, add a placeholder bye team. Whoever is paired with it sits out that round, and each team gets exactly one bye per round robin.
- What is the circle method for scheduling?
- Fix one team in place and rotate the others one position each round. Reading the pairs off each rotation gives a full round robin where every pair meets once.
